The Mercedes-AMG One Sounds Like a Modern F1 Car

Believe it or not, it’s been nearly three full years since Mercedes revealed its AMG One hypercar. The project faced delays back in 2018 because engineers had a particularly tough time trying to get the car’s Formula 1-sourced 1.6-liter turbocharged V-6 hybrid power unit—which was never meant to be used in a road car—to comply with modern emissions standards. Well, according to Mercedes, everything’s been figured out, and testing is finally underway.

Testing has begun on the AMG One’s race-derived engine, and unsurprisingly, the final product sounds exactly like a modern F1 car.
The company confirmed today the car’s “comprehensively electrified and complex” 1000-plus-hp powertrain has been finalized and approved for testing for the first time. Accompanying the announcement is a minute-long video of the car on track, giving us our first real listen to the car’s exhaust note. Unsurprisingly, it sounds almost identical to your average hybrid-era Formula 1 car.
The next step in the car’s development? Mercedes says it plans to bring the car to the Nürburgring Nordschleife for testing during the track’s industry test pool days, which should happen in the near future. It’ll be the closest thing to an F1 car on the Green Hell since Nick Heidfeld took his BMW Sauber on the track in 2007. We can’t wait.
