Getting To And From Newark Airport (EWR) from Manhattan

Newark Airport is one of the three major airports servicing New York City. It’s located in New Jersey, 18 miles from midtown Manhattan. Over 40 million passengers pass through Newark Airport annually. If you plan to take a car or taxi, it’s generally more expensive to travel to/from Newark than LaGuardia (LGA) or Kennedy (JFK) airports. Getting from EWR to Manhattan (and back):

• AirTrain: The AirTrain does more than connect terminals within Newark Airport. It also takes passengers to the NJTransit and Amtrak train station, which will bring you into Manhattan. Taking the AirTrain can be much quicker than taking a cab or bus, and it’s much more affordable. It costs $7.75 to ride one way. Consult the schedule to determine the schedule of connecting trains. Service is available 24 hours a day.
• Taxis (From Newark Airport): Taxis from Newark Airport run on a meter system. Most rides to Manhattan will cost you between $50 – $75. Taxis are available outside of every terminal, and there is typically a taxi stand. There is an additional charge for luggage over 24 inches if the driver handles the bags.
• Taxis (To Newark Airport): If you’re taking a taxi to Newark Airport from Manhattan you will be charged a metered fare plus return tolls and any applicable surcharges (rush hour, credit card usage, etc.).
• Car Services: Prearrange for a car service to meet you at the airport, or call one when your flight touches down. This is a great option if you want to avoid waiting in line for a taxi or if you have a group larger than four people and want to arrange for a van or limousine.
• Private Shuttles: Several companies offer shuttles to Manhattan, including:

Rides are available 24 hours a day, although wait times for shared transfers at night may vary.
  • Newark Airport Express: Available from 4 a.m. – 1 a.m., these shuttles leave every 20-30 minutes for midtown Manhattan. One-way fare is $17, but you can save by buying round-trip tickets, as they are $30. There is a discount for military personnel with military ID and their accompanying families.You can choose to disembark at Grand Central, Port Authority or Bryant Park. The ride takes about an hour.   • SuperShuttle: Available 24 hours a day, this shuttle provides door to door service for your party. You can choose to share a ride, rent an exclusive car for your party, or get a luxury car. Fares vary depending on destination. No reservations are required to get from the airport to your destination, but they are required for your return trip to the airport.   • NYC Express Bus offers transports between Newark Airport and JFK or LGA for $29 for person. If you’re traveling from Newark you’ll catch the Newark Airport Express bus which will take you to Grand Central where you will catch another shuttle to JFK or LGA.
• Rental Cars: Consult this list of rental car companies serving EWR if you need to rent a car. I discourage visitors to New York City from renting cars, unless they’re planning extensive travel outside of the major metropolitan area. Parking is both expensive and difficult to find, and you will find your money better spent on mass transit and taxis.

Short-term parking is available if you’re picking-up/dropping off at the airport, and long-term parking is available if you’re leaving your car overnight or longer.
